“It’s not what the world holds for you, it’s what you bring to it.”
I had the great pleasure of speaking with our Year 10 students as they began Careers Week on Monday. As they embarked on some serious thinking about their own futures, I mentioned one of my favourite quotes from an old Anne of Green Gables movie.
When we talk about careers, it’s easy to think the questions we need to ask are “What do I want?” or “How can I get to where I want to be and achieve my dreams?”
Those are not necessarily bad questions, but they miss the opportunity to ask something greater: what can I give?
At Heathdale, we believe each person is uniquely made by God with their own talents, gifts, purpose and potential. With that in mind, it’s good to ask what we might bring to the world that can express the talents that God has given us, and which enables as individuals to bring good to those around us.
How might our talented students grow to use their abilities to make the world more beautiful, orderly, safe, kind, strong, healthy, sane or clever? How will the everyday of their lives reflect the purpose and gifts that God has given them used in a way that brings about good?
When we live to give, with whatever we do in life to give, we find far more satisfaction that we do when we live to get. Jesus said, “Freely you have received, so freely, freely give.”
If you have received the riches of God’s love and you know the blessings that He has given you, then you can give with your life without being afraid that you will run dry.
I look forward to seeing all the amazing and exceptional ways in which our students will seek to bless others and give of themselves as they seek their potential and purpose.
