“God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to forgive us and bring us near to God.” (1 John 4:9-10)

Father God,

As we have recently commemorated Anzac Day, the words “honour”, “sacrifice” and “duty” come to mind. Lord, we thank You for the many ways that those serving our country have lived out these ideals, for the way that many have chosen to put their own lives in danger, and especially for those who have surrendered their own life for the good of others.

Jesus, we recognise these great sacrifices. Help us to see how they reflect Your most wonderful sacrifice – one of love, honour, and life-giving freedom.

Please show us how to enjoy the peace and freedoms we have in Australia, thanks to the soldiers that have gone before us, and help us also see and enjoy the ultimate and forever freedom we have in You, because of Your most wonderful sacrifice. You gave Your own life to win forgiveness and freedom for the world!

We pray for our world, still in war, still in turmoil. For those countries where war is a daily reality, please bring peace. Where corruption thrives and goes unchecked, please bring justice. Where people, made by You with inherent dignity, are treated as though they had none, please let compassion and care flourish.

In our school community, may loving kindness, sacrifice, forgiveness and justice abound. Help us all – parents, staff, students – not shy away from surrendering our preferences for the good of others. Remind us that this is a great way to live. Thank you that You showed us first how to love like this and help us follow your ways.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
