CHINA TRIP

Recently we had an after school meeting for the China Trip in September. The trip is a highlight of the calendar for our attending students and one of the valuable overseas experiences Heathdale offers in Senior School. We had food and games and a speaker from a Christian charity that works with orphans and the poor in China. – Linda Marion

ASTHMA UPDATE FROM FIRST AID TEAM

What is Asthma?

Asthma is caused by narrowing of the small air passages in the lungs.
Signs and symptoms include: Breathing problems, Wheezing, Coughing
Many things can trigger asthma such as: exercise, virus/cold, changes in the weather, dust mites, pollens or pets

Prevention is key! Avoid triggers and keep hay fever and eczema under control. Take preventer medication daily as prescribed to help prevent episodes of asthma. Administer reliever medication (Ventolin) as needed to help open airways.

In an asthma episode follow your child’s Asthma Action Plan or follow the recommended 4x4x4 asthma first aid steps:

1. Sit child comfortably upright.

2. Shake a blue reliever puffer and give four separate puffs through a spacer. Give one puff at a time and ask child to take four breaths from the spacer after each puff.

3. Wait four minutes. If there is no improvement in your child's asthma, repeat Step 2.

4. If there is still no improvement, call an ambulance immediately. State that your child is having an asthma emergency. Continuously repeat Steps 2 and 3 while waiting for the ambulance.

At Heathdale: In case of emergency, general use Ventolin and disposable spacers are kept in the First Aid room, asthma stations around campus and in the first aid kit/s taken on excursions.
Resources: Asthmakids.org.au and Kiss My Asthma app, recommended by Asthma Australia.
