A Delicious Way to Learn

Preps at our Werribee campus learned about ANZAC Day through a fun, hands-on experience, baking ANZAC biscuits while reflecting on service, sacrifice and gratitude.

Do you know how ANZAC biscuits got their name? The Preps do!

At the Werribee campus, Prep students have been learning about celebrations and commemorations from a Christian perspective while baking ANZAC biscuits. Originally known as "soldier" or "army biscuits," the name was changed to honour the history of ANZAC Day, as soldiers ate these biscuits during their service. Made with rolled oats, sugar, flour, butter and golden syrup, they were not only nutritious and energising but also kept well over time.

Through this hands-on activity, students build early literacy and numeracy skills by measuring ingredients, following instructions and working as a team. Baking also strengthens fine motor skills and reinforces the joy of sharing with others.

This experience helped students connect with Australian heritage while deepening their understanding of faith, community and remembrance in honouring significant occasions. It encourages thankfulness and appreciation for those who sacrificed, inspiring students to live out Christian values of service, love and kindness.

We hope the Preps reflected on the themes of service, sacrifice and gratitude—values that align with Christian teachings as they enjoyed their delicious treat.
